Barbara Hawkins, Associate Director, LT™ Learning Teams

Barbara Hawkins received her BA in Biology from Holy Names College in Oakland, California, her MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from UCLA, and her PhD in Applied Linguistics, also from UCLA.  She earned her California Multiple Subjects teaching credential from California State University, Los Angeles. She taught English to children and adults in Salamanca, Spain for three years, and has taught in public elementary schools for 7 years. Her K-12 teaching experience also includes 4 years in private schools, at both the elementary and secondary levels.  She taught Mathematics and Science methods courses in the Bilingual Education (Spanish/English) program in the Department of Elementary Education at California State University, Northridge; her duties also included student teacher supervision and the development and teaching of Mathematics education courses in the Master’s program.  She was also heavily involved in program development and teaching in the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP), with a strong emphasis on cross-disciplinary efforts.  Most recently, she taught at Teachers College, Columbia University in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Program in the Arts and Humanities Department.  Her research and teaching interests center on Classroom Discourse and Subject Matter Education for K-12 second language students, both of which are reflected in the signature courses she developed and taught while there, as well as in her more general TESOL methods and Student Teacher Supervision courses.  Integral to her practice as both a teacher and researcher is collaboration across content areas and teaching levels which have traditionally been treated as separate entities.
